Gay men are a stigmatized sexual minority more likely to experience mental health difficulties and seek out psychotherapy than the general population. The purpose of this course is to provide orienting perspectives useful to psychotherapists interested in working with gay men. The issues a patient brings to therapy are modulated by their identities, and having a working model of gay male identity development, developmental obstacles, and common psychological defenses will prove useful in clinical work with gay men. The course will consist of three sections: assessment and case formulation, therapeutic intervention, and a Q&A.
