This 3 CE Implicit Bias course meets the requirements of the Michigan Board of Counseling (MI LPC) and the Michigan Board of Marriage and Family Therapy (MI LMFT), Missouri Committee for Social Workers (MS LSW) implicit bias training.
Implicit bias can manifest within the therapeutic space in a multitude of ways. One of the ways implicit bias can influence behavior is in the form of microaggressions: the sometimes unintentional or intentional, verbal or nonverbal comments that demean or behaviors that exclude. It is imperative that therapists have an understanding of what microaggressions are and how they can be addressed. Reparative steps will be explored through multiple roles within microaggression situations: as actor, where the therapist commits a microaggression; as target, where the therapist is receiving a microaggression or supporting a client who received a microaggression; and finally, as observer, where the therapist is witnessing a microaggression, either in group or amongst colleagues. By building our awareness and skills for response, clinicians can be better prepared to navigate with humility and advocacy.
