What you will learn from this course:

Course Learning Outcome Objectives

  • Participants will be able to distinguish both the difference and relationship between the two concepts of cultural competence and cultural humility within healthcare delivery.

  • Participants will be able to list at least two ways an unexamined practice based in ethnocentric and monocultural frameworks can negatively impact the patient-provider relationship.

  • Participants will compare at least two culturally responsive strategies that promote increased self-reflexivity for enhanced practice applicable to the many interdisciplinary fields within both medical and therapeutic settings.

Cultural Competency Training Course Description

Over the last four decades, the increasing acceptance and prioritization of culturally responsive frameworks have contributed to meaningful advancements in clinical effectiveness.

In today's ever-more multicultural society, it is essential for clinicians to develop not only the knowledge and skills to provide culturally competent care, but also a grounded and sustained attitude of cultural humility.

Achieving a culturally responsive and humble clinical practice though necessitates a critical examination of the self, including clinicians’ worldviews, implicit biases, and professional assumptions.

Central to this process is an exploration of the ways in which ethnocentric and monocultural perspectives may be internalized and subsequently reproduced within our delivery of care.

This one-hour session will review an ambitious agenda that invites all interdisciplinary healthcare workers to reflect on cultural assumptions embedded within our fields and examine the practice of cultural humility as a tool for mitigating cultural harm.
