Adult ADHD, Neurodiversity, and Cultural Competency: Ethical and Neuroinclusive Approaches for Mental Health Professionals

As diagnostic rates of Adult ADHD continue to rise, healthcare providers and healthcare systems have not effectively adapted neuroinclusive strategies, despite growing awareness and knowledge of Adult ADHD (Johnson & Ahluwalia, 2025).  Neuroinclusion recognizes that Adult ADHD and other forms of neurodiversity are not inherently disabilities, but rather, become disabilities when society is unable to adapt, support, and accommodate neurodiverse experiences (Johnson & Ahluwalia, 2025). Neuroinclusion can be seen as a part of cultural competency, which is addressed across multiple mental health professions in their code of ethics or professional competencies (American Art Therapy Association, 2011; AATA, 2013; American Counseling Association, 2014; American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, 2004; AAMFT 2026; American Music Therapy Association, 2013; AMTA, 2019; American Psychological Association, 2017a; APA, 2017b; National Association of Social Workers, 2015; NASW, 2021; National Board of Certified Counselors, 2023; Ratts et al., 2016).

Research indicates that discrimination and prejudice are the least-addressed topics in cultural competency trainings for mental health professionals (Chu et al., 2022). This presentation bridges this gap indicated in the literature by focusing on the impacts of ableism on Adults with ADHD (or, Adult ADHDers, as spoken in this presentation). This presentation also addresses facilitators and barriers of neuroinclusion, as well as expands the ethical considerations of including client self-diagnosis via social media while working with Adult ADHDers and expanding the role of mental health professionals to further address topics such as workplace discrimination in the therapeutic setting.
