Adult ADHD and Autism in Clinical Practice: Neurodivergent-Affirming Diagnosis and Treatment (12 CE)

This 12-hour continuing education bundle provides an integrated, evidence-based exploration of adult ADHD and adult autism through a neurodivergent-affirming lens.

Designed for clinicians seeking to improve diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic effectiveness, this course emphasizes measurable skills in assessment, differential diagnosis, and treatment planning for neurodiverse adults.

Participants will learn to differentiate adult ADHD and autism presentations, recognize intersectional factors that contribute to misdiagnosis, and implement affirming therapeutic strategies that promote inclusion and client empowerment.

By the end of this 12 CE training, participants will be able to:

  1. Define the diagnostic criteria for both adult ADHD and adult autism and demonstrate examples of these criteria in clinical practice.

  2. Compare and contrast the overlapping and distinct clinical presentations, co-occurring conditions, and differential diagnoses between ADHD and autism in adults.

  3. Identify at least ten unique challenges experienced by adults with ADHD and at least five overlooked challenges experienced by autistic adults.

  4. Describe at least three common factors leading to misdiagnosis or underdiagnosis of ADHD and autism in adults.

  5. Explain how intersectionality—including gender, race, and cultural identity—impacts diagnosis and care for neurodivergent adults.

  6. Identify and apply at least three validated assessment tools that support accurate diagnosis of ADHD and autism in adults.

  7. Recognize at least five barriers to providing neurodivergent-affirming care at individual and systemic levels.

  8. Apply at least five neurodivergent-affirming interventions and demonstrate how to adapt therapeutic approaches to meet the needs of neurodiverse adults, including those from marginalized populations.
